FAQs
Natural flavor is derived only from natural sources and typically represents the named characterizing source; Natural & Artificial contains both natural flavor materials and artificial/synthetic flavor components. Natural Flavor WONF (“With Other Natural Flavors”) is still natural, but the named flavor is supported or reinforced by other natural flavors that may not come from the named source.

As it is the only flavoring with FDA Standards of Identity (legal recipes), there are special labeling implications for Vanilla. These standards of identity establish what may be labeled and sold as vanilla extract, vanilla flavoring, and other vanilla products.
According to our recent proprietary survey, the majority of consumers (83%) say clean/natural flavors are important. (McCormick Flavor Solutions 2023 National Clean Survey) There is no FDA definition for "clean". Instead, the definition of "clean label" is subjective and can mean many things to many people. Consumers create their own definition, many searching for products that feature organic and no artificial ingredient or flavor claims.
Note - "Natural Flavors" may contain synthetic carriers (like PG) and/or synthetic additives (like BHT).
